You know those twenty-two billion or so water bottles that we trash every year? Well, British environmentalist and explorer David de Rothschild is putting some of them to use. For his latest project, Plastiki, he constructed a boat made of discarded plastic containters which will be sailing from San Francisco to Australia. He snagged Joe Haller and Ian Hannula, the tastemakers and designers from Nice Collective, to help out with the interior and other details. "We realized right away we had this kindred passion," Haller explains. "So David brought us on as sort of 'Lifestyle Designers.' " Their vision was to keep thing sorts of home-y but utilitarian, so they took old military tents and blankets and turned them into sweaters, pillows, and other items for the crew—in short, repurposing and reinventing the same way de Rothschild always has. The big reveal is on Friday, but here's a sneak peek at what the duo has been working on. And check out ThePlastiki.com for more info on the expedition.
